....U.S.S. KAWISHIWI (AO-146) is the fourth of a new class of fleet oilers.   She  is 655 feet  in length with a beam  of  86 feet.   She  has  equipment  and devices specifically  designed  for  the  rapid  transfer of petro- leum products and cargo to the forces afloat operating at high speed or  in bad weather.   She is equipped to carry  a  cargo  of  130,600  barrels  of fuel oil, 48,700 barrels of aviation fuel and 8,000 barrels of diesel oil. .. .The defensive armament of the KAWISHIWI includes automatic loading  rapid firing guns,  together with the latest type  of devices  for their control.  The latest de- velopments  in  fire  fighting  equipment  are  installed. Her speed is considerable in excess of previous naval ships of her type. .. Origin of the name KAWISHIWI .. Oilers of the U.S.Navy are named after rivers. Kawishiwi, the river for which this ship is named, is in the northwest corner of the State of Minnesota. ..

...The river itself rises in a cluster of lakes in Lake County and flows through several small lakes and then forms two branches which join near White Iron Lake and flows North through Fall Lake to a chain of lakes on the Ontario line.  The total length of the river is approximately 60 miles. .. ....The territory the river traverses is part of the Su- perior National Forest and is mostly roadless. Much of the surrounding territory has been set aside for recreational purposes and remains much as the early French explorers, fur traders and missionaries with an abundance of wildlife and fish.  It is one of the few places in the United States where moose can be found. .. ...One of the many scenic treats offered to the conoeist on the Kawishiwi are the painted rocks, done by unknown Indian painters centuries ago. .. ...The river is also used commercially for logging and hydroelectric power.

....The Honorable Senator Hubert H. Humphry  (D-Minn.)  was born May 27, 1911 in Wallace, South Dakota.  He is married  and is the father of four children, a girl and three boys. .. ....Senator Humphrey was elected  to the United States Senate in 1948 and is presently serving on the following Senate Committees. Committee on Foreign Relations,  Committee on  Agriculture  and Forestry,  Committee  on Small Business,  Member of President's Commission on  Intergovernmental  Relations,  Member  of Demo- cratic Steering Committee in the  Senate.   In  the  field of  foreign affairs he  has  been  an active supporter and sponser of the Point Four Program, Reciprocal Trade Policy, Mutual Security and North Atlantic Treaty, along with the Marshall Plan; Sponsor of Wheat for India and Wheat for Pakistan programs.
