Origin of the name KAWISHIWI .. Oilers of the U.S.Navy are named after rivers. Kawishiwi, the river for which this ship is named, is in the northwest corner of the State of Minnesota. .. |
...The
river itself rises in a cluster of lakes in Lake County and flows
through
several small lakes and then forms two branches which join near White
Iron
Lake and flows North through Fall Lake to a chain of lakes on the
Ontario
line. The total length of the river is approximately 60 miles.
.. ....The territory the river traverses is part of the Su- perior National Forest and is mostly roadless. Much of the surrounding territory has been set aside for recreational purposes and remains much as the early French explorers, fur traders and missionaries with an abundance of wildlife and fish. It is one of the few places in the United States where moose can be found. .. ...One of the many scenic treats offered to the conoeist on the Kawishiwi are the painted rocks, done by unknown Indian painters centuries ago. .. ...The river is also used commercially for logging and hydroelectric power. |
